WHAT IS ENOUGH?

Enough, what it is and what it means, has been coming up in conversations around me.

The questions sound like:

  • When do I know I have enough (money, happiness, success)?
  • How do I know that I am enough (of a spouse, parent, professional, friend)?
  • When have I done enough (in a relationship, situation)?

The statements sound like:

  • I can’t do this anymore I’ve had enough of this!
  • ENOUGH! (as in a parent telling this to a child)
  • I feel like I can’t do enough.

Here’s my opinion –

  • Enough is not quantifiable. Enough is a feeling.
  • Enough stems from confidence, from connection to self, from a positive frame on life. When a person has those, enough can be felt in the connection between the head, heart, and gut.
  • Enough does not equal seeking more.
  • Enough is not bad.
  • Enough is not good.
  • Enough is it’s own feeling.

So, consider these answers to the above questions:

When do I know I have enough (money, happiness, success)?
When you are content in your daily life, and feel proud of what you have filling your internal and external space. The longing for more is more of a dream, and not a burden.

How do I know that I am enough (of a spouse, parent, professional, friend)?
When you are content with what you give others, what you receive in return, and what you give to yourself. When you can look in the mirror and be proud at the reflection that is looking back at you.

When have I done enough (in a relationship, support role)?
When you can lay your head down at night and, most often, think that you did your best even if it wasn’t perfect.

Enough looks different for everyone. What’s your enough?
